Dr. Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an early pioneer of computer science and one of the most famous women achievers in a field dominated by men. Known as “Amazing Grace” and “the first lady of software,” Dr. Hopper paved the way for modern-day computer science. Among her many accomplishments, Hopper invented the first compiler and was instrumental in the development of the COBOL computer programming language.
On November 22, Hopper was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously by President Barack Obama during a White House ceremony. In honor of her receiving the highest civilian honor in the United States, we bring you this infographic highlighting Dr. Hopper’s numerous contributions to science, computing and society.
