The finals of 2020-2021 ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge (ASC20-21) kicked off on May 8, 2021 at Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China. Only 28 teams advanced to the finals out of 300+ from universities all over the world. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the finals are organized to include both on-site and virtual participation. The Top21 teams from the Chinese mainland joined the finals on-site, and the Top7 teams outside of the Chinese mainland participated virtually. They tackled challenging tasks such as pulsar search, language exam, quantum computing simulation, high performance benchmarks HPL & HPCG, group competition and a mystery application. The contenders are competing for various awards including the Champion, Silver Prize, the Highest LINPACK, and e Prize. You are welcomed to watch the live stream of the finals at ASC official website http://www.asc-events.org/ASC20-21/.
The 26th AI&HPC Connection Workshop will also be held during the finals. Speakers include: Jack Dongarra, ASC Advisory Committee Chair and Distinguished Professor at University of Tennessee; Thomas Sterling, Director of AI Computing Systems Laboratory (AICSL), Professor of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University, Bloomington; Marek Michalewicz, Director at Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw.

So the three prior world champions will compete directly. It has created massive interest and enthusiasm for this round of the ASC20-21 finals.
Remarkable new contenders have also reached the finals such as Universidad EAFIT, Ural Federal University, Jinan University, and Southern University of Science and Technology. There is also a lot of excitement about the debuting teams of Monash University, Hunan University and Lanzhou University for making their first ASC finals appearance this year. These new enthusiastic contenders will make the competition intense until the very last moment.
The ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge is the world’s largest student supercomputer competition, sponsored and organized by Asia Supercomputer Community and supported by Asian, European, and American experts and institutions. The main objectives of ASC are to encourage exchange and training of young supercomputing talent from different countries, improve supercomputing applications and R&D capacity, boost the development of supercomputing, and promote technical and industrial innovation. The first ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge was held in 2012 and since has attracted nearly 10,000 undergraduates from all over the world. The ASC20-21 Student Supercomputer Challenge is jointly organized by Asia Supercomputer Community and Southern University of Science and Technology.
