In advance of the SC21 conference, taking place in St. Louis and online November 14-19, HPCwire interviewed two of the people leading the effort to put on the 34th annual – and first hybrid – SC. In this video interview feature, Bronis de Supinski, SC21 Conference General Chair, and Jeff Hollingsworth, Conference Vice Chair, discuss this year’s unique format, the unifying theme (Science and Beyond), and their most memorable SC moments.
De Supinski and Hollingsworth detailed the format of this year’s SC – with both in-person and virtual components – and the safety mechanisms that are in place, including a vaccine and mask mandate. They were frank about the unique challenges the organizers faced, dealing with pandemic uncertainties and holding the conference at a brand-new venue with this being the show’s first outing in St. Louis.
“Most of the content will be available remotely with the exception of in-person tutorials,” said de Supinski. “We’ll have nine different rooms that will be livestreamed with high-quality video and audio feeds.”
As we were wrapping up the interview, Hollingsworth opened up about what they’ve been calling “the most unique SC since last year,” with the previous event going all virtual and this year moving to a hybrid format.
“I think hybrid is going to create new opportunities and some form of hybrid will become the norm, but it’s going to probably take us a couple more years to fine-tune it,” he said.
“You kind of have no choice to be hybrid these days, going into the future,” added de Supinski.
