STOCKHOLM, Nov. 6, 2019 — Advania Data Centers (ADC) and Stockholm Exergi (the local energy provider), have joined in partnership for the construction of a new data center in Stockholm, Sweden. ADC will lease land in Stockholm Data Parks to build the data center, and the heat generated by computing equipment in the data center will be used for local house-heating in Stockholm. This arrangement ensures a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of the data center, making it environmentally friendly, and will utilize heat that is traditionally wasted for the benefit of the local community.
This is the first data center ADC plans to build outside of Iceland, where it already runs two first-class DC’s. One in Hafnarfjörður, within the capital region of Reykjavik, and one of Europe’s largest data center campuses in Reykjanesbær. By investing in Stockholm, ADC positions itself in two separate electricity markets and geo-locations. The partnership strengthens ADC´s international competitiveness, increases its operational security and efficiency, and will improve the company’s customer service. ADC will be able to serve the ever-growing demand for large scale computing. The company offers both high density data center space as well as its flagship artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure: HPC|FLOW. To optimize the colocation environment for high density enterprise workloads, ADC will offer standard rack density of more than 40kW per rack.
Design-work and preparation for construction are already underway, the first phase of the facilities is scheduled to be ready for use late 2020. This new enterprise grade data center will be certified with ISO 27001, like all existing data center facilities that ADC operates and owns. It will be built in the city’s central Information and Communications Technology (ICT) district, Kista, which is one of the world’s largest ICT cluster, second only to Silicon Valley (USA). The location provides access to robust technical infrastructure and brings the company to the heart of technical innovation in Europe, with one of the world’s most environmentally friendly data center options. The build-up will be in seven phases, with a total investment of $70 million (USD).
