Sept. 7 — Appentra’s CEO Manuel Arenaz has traveled to Lugano, Switzerland, to attend EuroHack 2017, the third GPU Hackathon organized by the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.
This event is part of the series of 2017 GPU Hackathons organized by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the world-class supercomputing facilities at Juelich, Brookhaven, NASA, CSCS and OLCF.
EuroHack 2017 provides an opportunity for users of groups of large hybrid CPU-GPU systems to either port their (potentially) scalable application to GPU accelerators, or optimize an existing GPU-enabled application, on a state-of-the-art GPU system. The goal is that the development teams leave at the end of the week with applications running on GPUs, or at least with a clear roadmap of how to get there.
PhD Manuel Arenaz is attending as mentor of the team ALYA coming from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). He is helping the BSC team to develop an OpenACC version of the software package ALYA, a simulation code for high performance computational mechanics that solves coupled multiphysics problems. He is using the an approach based on the parallel design patterns supported by our tool Parallware Trainer, an interactive real-time editor to facilitate the learning, usage and implementation of parallel programming using OpenMP and OpenACC . This approach has already been successfully applied in the GPU mini-hackathon organized at the Supercomputing Center of Galicia (CESGA) earlier this year.
“The EuroHack 2017 will allow us to get feedback from the participants to continue improving Parallware Trainer. The feedback will be used to develop new features that are of interest in world-class training courses on OpenMP and OpenACC. Moreover, this is a great opportunity to learn how to improve the organization of the second GPU Hackathon at CESGA, which we will be organized during next year,” said the company.
“In general, this is being a great experience! We think that hackathons like this are really important in order to scientists and engineers get the knowledge and tools to solve essential problems efficiently.”
