Student Cluster Competition Applications Are Now Being Accepted

NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 27 — Students interested in demonstrating their high-performance computing skills on a global stage are invited to form teams and sign up to compete in the eighth annual Student Cluster Competition at the SC14 conference to be held Nov. 16-21, 2014, in New Orleans. SC14 is the premier international conference on high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis.

The Student Cluster Competition is a high energy event featuring young supercomputing talent from around the world competing to build and operate powerful cluster computers. Applications are now being accepted and the deadline for team submissions is Friday, April 11, 2014.

Created as an opportunity to showcase student expertise in a friendly yet spirited competition, the Student Cluster Competition aims to introduce the next generation of students to the high-performance computing community. Over the last couple of years, the competition has drawn teams from around the world, including Australia, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Germany, Russia, Taiwan and the United States.

Team proposals must be submitted via the SC14 submission site at https://submissions.supercomputing.org/.

“The energy and dedication that the student teams bring to the Student Cluster Competition is inspiring, especially as they work around the clock to overcome obstacles and get their systems up and running,” said Student Cluster Competition Chair Dustin Leverman of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. “Though they are competing all out against one another, the teams also share a camaraderie as they race to the end.”

How the Challenge Works

In this real-time, non-stop, 48-hour competition, teams of undergraduate and/or high school students assemble small cluster computers on the SC14 exhibit floor and race to demonstrate the greatest sustained performance across a series of applications. In the Standard Track, teams of six students will partner with vendors to design and build a cutting-edge cluster from commercially available components that does not exceed a 26-amp power limit, and they will work with application experts to tune and run the competition codes.

The Student Cluster Competiton is part of the HPC Interconnections program (formerly SC Communities), which brings together programs designed to support emerging leaders and groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in computing. This program provides opportunities for students, faculty, early-career professionals and international attendees to participate in the SC Conference through our Broader Engagement, Experiencing HPC for Undergraduates, Student Cluster Competition, Student Job Fair and Student Volunteers activities.

Limited travel support is available for some of these programs; we encourage you to apply. Applications open April 1 for Broader Engagement, Student Volunteers and Experiencing HPC for Undergraduates.
