SEATTLE, Nov. 14, 2018 — Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. today announced it will support Intel’s upcoming Cascade Lake advance performance processors in systems starting in 2019. The Intel Xeon Scalable processors will first be available in Cray’s CS500 line of systems and then, in 2020, on Cray’s new exascale-class systems, code named Shasta. Designed for the most demanding high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, Cascade Lake advanced performance processors will offer Cray customers a new powerful and flexible option in customizing their supercomputing platforms.

The Cray CS500 cluster supercomputers are also highly customizable, and expressly designed to handle the most demanding range of simulation, research, analytics, and machine learning problems at scale. They provide flexible node configurations featuring the latest processor and interconnect technologies, giving customers the ability to tailor a system to specific needs — from an all-purpose high-performance computing cluster to an accelerated system configured for shared memory, large memory, or accelerator-based tasks. Its liquid-cooled design offers more energy savings and is built to efficiently house highly dense and higher-wattage solutions.
In addition to the Cray CS500 system, the newly-introduced supercomputer, code-named “Shasta,” will also support Intel Cascade Lake advanced performance processors. Built to be data-centric, Shasta features a rich software environment and a new high-performance interconnect, Slingshot, and can handle multiple workloads simultaneously. The Cascade Lake advanced performance processors, paired with Shasta’s data-centric design, will give customers the flexibility to run complex workloads from modeling and simulation to AI and analytics.
