March 12, 2020 — First users of CSC’s next flagship supercomputer Mahti have been chosen. These Pilot Projects will be run during the Mahti’s acceptance phase.
CSC’s Scientific Customer Panel evaluated 33 applications and selected 22 as Mahti Pilot Projects.
Very wide range of projects was chosen as Pilot Projects. These projects are expected to produce heavy load and stress test the new environment in a versatile way. Pilot Projects are expected to be run in a short four weeks period.
In the Pilot Projects, the researchers are studying, for example, the impacts of the most extreme space storms (like Carrington storm in 1859) on modern infrastructure (Palmroth), dry eye syndrome (Liekkinen), glass plasticity (Frankberg), generation of magnetic fields in the Sun (Käpylä) and the phase transition shortly after the Big Bang (Gould).

Public abstracts of chosen projects
Supercomputer Mahti is the second phase of CSC’s next generation computing and data management environment. After the deployment, CSC’s new environment is ready.
Mahti is a BullSequana XH2000 system by Atos. Mahti contains of 1404 nodes with a peak performance of 7.5 Pflops. Each node has two 64 core AMD EPYC 7H12 processors, altogether 180 000 cores. Mahti has full 200 Gbps HDR InfiniBand connection to each node. Mahti technical specifications
Our current best estimation is that Mahti Pilots will start in April and if all goes well during the Pilot Phase, Mahti general availability will start in May.
