SINGAPORE, March 20, 2019 — Moving data is an essential foundation of national and global science. National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore, host of the SupercomputingAsia (SCA) 2019 conference held this week in Singapore, challenged the academic and commercial sector to test their tools and products on the 100G advance research and education network connecting NSCC Singapore with the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) in Australia, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) in Korea, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan and StarLight in the USA.
Seven teams from the USA, Japan and international teams competed in the inaugural Data Mover Challenge with each bringing a unique approach to the problem of moving large science data sets. After two months of grueling development and deployment of individual teams’ software, the results of the inaugural Data Mover Challenge were announced at the SupercomputingAsia (SCA) 2019 conference on 13 March 2019. Two prizes were awarded.
Recipients of the awards were:
1. Overall Winner Award
Zettar Inc. They achieve an amazing 68 Gbps transfer rate between Chicago and NSCC (Singapore).
2. Most Innovative Award
StarLight/iCAIR (International Center for Advanced Internet Research) team. They impressed the judges with their flexible framework to support large data transfers.
The challenge is made possible with the ardent support of the many partners across the Asia-Pacific region namely:
Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC), INTERNET2, International Networks at Indiana University, Korea Research Environment Open NETwork (KREONET), Pacific Research Platform, Pacific Wave, National Computational Infrastructure of Australia(NCI), National Institute of Information and Communication Technology of Japan (NICT), Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network (SingAREN), Starlight and TransPAC.
