AUSTIN, Tex., Nov. 17 — GCS member centre High Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart (HLRS) announced today that it has received top honours in the 2015 HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, which were presented at the 2015 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC15) in Austin, Texas. HLRS has been recognized as HPCwire Readers’ Choice in the category “Best Use of HPC in Automotive” for a project executed by HLRS in cooperation with data storage supplier DataDirect Networks (DDN) and the Automotive Simulation Center Stuttgart (ASCS).
The 2015 HPCwire readers’ and editors’ choice was made for a challenging simulation project run on the HLRS high-performance computing (HPC) system Hornet, a Cray XC40-system. In cooperation with its partner DDN and supported by the ASCS, HLRS ran more than 1,000 car crash simulations within 24 hours. Exploiting the petascale computing power of the HLRS supercomputer, DDN storage was leveraged to overcome the Input/Output bottleneck challenges that previously limited the ability to increase simulations in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) workflows.
“Winning this award is a big honour for the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart. We are particularly pleased about our project receiving this level of acknowledgement and public attention because it is an excellent example of how HLRS can contribute to industrial progress with its partners,” pointed out Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael M. Resch, Director of HLRS. HLRS is located right in the heart of one of Europe’s economically strongest and most innovative regions, Stuttgart, which is particularly famous for its well-known global players in the automotive industry. Thus HLRS with all its HPC expertise has always had a major focus on Scientific Engineering. We’d like to thank HPCwire for enabling our participation in this poll and particularly do thank all HPCwire readers for their support.” The award was received by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael M. Resch, Director of HLRS, and Dr. Bastian Koller, Managing Director of HLRS.
“The groundbreaking work of the HLRS and the Automotive Simulation Center demonstrates the benefit that HPC technology delivers in far-ranging industry applications. Its scientific achievements, such as the results driven by the collaboration between HLRS and its industrial partners, are the inspiration for our innovation at DDN,” said Molly Rector, CMO at DDN. “DDN is pleased to join HPCWire in congratulating HLRS for their inventive work in leveraging HPC technology to accelerate time to market for global enterprises while making the world a safer place to live.”
The coveted annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are determined through a nomination and voting process with the global HPCwire community, as well as selections from the HPCwire editors. The awards are an annual feature of the publication and constitute prestigious recognition from the HPC community. These awards are revealed each year to kick off the annual supercomputing conference, which showcases high performance computing, networking, storage, and data analysis.
“HPCwire readers are among the most informed in the HPC community and these awards are ultimately given to the organizations that are making the greatest impact in advancing technology and humanity itself through high performance computing,” said Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications, publisher of HPCwire. “The HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards send a strong message of support and appreciation from those in the global HPC community. We are proud to be able to recognize these efforts each your and our congratulations go out to all the winners.”

About GCS
The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) combines the three national supercomputing centres HLRS (High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart), JSC (Jülich Supercomputing Centre), and LRZ (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, Garching near Munich) into Germany’s Tier-0 supercomputing institution. Concertedly, the three centres provide the largest and most powerful supercomputing infrastructure in all of Europe to serve a wide range of industrial and research activities in various disciplines. They also provide top-class training and education for the national as well as the European High-Performance Computing (HPC) community. GCS is the German member of PRACE (Partnership for Advance Computing in Europe), an international non-profit association consisting of 25 member countries, whose representative organizations create a pan-European supercomputing infrastructure, providing access to computing and data management resources and services for large-scale scientific and engineering applications at the highest performance level.
