HPC-AI Advisory Council Gears Up for October Conference in UK, Invites Proposals

August 3, 2023

Aug. 3, 2023 — The HPC-AI Advisory Council‘s 5th Annual UK Conference, set for October 18-19, 2023, has an exciting agenda that delves into the intersection of high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), and environmental responsibility.

Topics include hardware developments, data sharing initiatives, ethical implications, the balance of research value vs carbon impact, and case studies on AI’s role in addressing global challenges. The council is open for presentation proposals, further promoting cross-disciplinary cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Hardware developments for responsible simulation and AI

  • Do development trends in GPU computing and ML counteract tentative moves toward more environmental responsibility?

Risks and opportunities of AI

  • Ethical and practical considerations about using AI to replace human work and/or traditional simulation techniques in real-world applications
  • Case studies discussing the role of AI in addressing global challenges and improving quality of life, as well as risks involved in using AI in this context

Data Sharing Initiatives:

  • Exploring collaborative frameworks and models to enhance cross-disciplinary cooperation and knowledge sharing
  • Examining initiatives such as the Public Sector Data Initiative (PSDI), European projects, and US projects for responsible data sharing
  • Discussing best practices, legal considerations, and ethical guidelines to facilitate secure and efficient data exchange

Sustainable Computing – Coarse Graining and Research Value vs. Carbon Impact:

  • Balancing the granularity of calculations in simulation and AI research to optimize efficiency without compromising research value – can we mitigate the trend of higher resolution always meaning more compute power?
  • Evaluating the carbon footprint associated with computational demands and exploring strategies to mitigate environmental impact
  • Net zero data centre strategies

The HPC-AI Advisory Council invites you to share your expertise in these topics and kindly request to use the below form to submit your presentation proposal.

The deadline for submission is September 1, 2023. Visit this website to apply.
