Infinera and Corsa Announce SC15 Demonstration

November 16, 2015

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 16 — Infinera, provider of Intelligent Transport Networks, and Corsa Technology, provider of performance software-defined networking (SDN) solutions, announced a new demonstration of SDN-enabled on-demand 100 gigabits per second (100G) packet services. The demonstration at the Supercomputing ’15 (SC15) conference shows the feasibility of delivering the scalable, high-bandwidth services required by high-performance computing (HPC) and advanced research & education (R&E) applications, with dynamic multilayer provisioning, precision switching and terabit traffic management, over a converged packet-optical transport network.

Infinera and Corsa collaborated to create this proof-of-concept demonstration using Corsa’s 100G DP6400 switching platform, Infinera’s Cloud Xpress metro optical transport platform and Infinera-developed SDN control capabilities. Highlights of the demonstration include:

  • 100G line-rate traffic management with precision switching and fine-grained quality of service (QoS) to support high-priority traffic with strong service-level guarantees using the DP6400 SDN performance switch platform
  • Metro Ethernet Forum standard E-LINE services, including Ethernet Private Line and Ethernet Virtual Private Line
  • 100 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) optical transport using the compact, two-rack unit (RU) Cloud Xpress with one terabit per second (Tb/s) input and output capacity
  • Dynamic, multilayer provisioning of packet and optical transport layers using an Open Daylight framework and a combination of open SDN protocols, including OpenFlow, Open Virtual Switch Data Base and NETCONF/YANG

“We are pleased to partner with Corsa on this demonstration and excited to showcase SDN-enabled 100G services that are scalable, dynamic and optimized through multi-layer provisioning,” said Stu Elby, senior vice president, Cloud Network Strategy and Technology at Infinera. “The combination of Corsa’s OpenFlow-controlled precision switching and Infinera’s Cloud Xpress and SDN control illustrates what HPC users and R&E network operators want: massively scalable, on-demand layer two services with traffic management and service guarantees. We have a strong track record of working with R&E network providers and look forward to working with them to introduce Cloud Xpress and SDN capabilities to meet their exploding bandwidth needs.”

“Corsa is innovating with Infinera to showcase our joint SDN solution capabilities,” said Bruce Gregory, CEO of Corsa. “We are deeply engaged and committed to serving HPC and R&E customers and uniquely capable of delivering the SDN-enabled solutions that they need. This demonstration highlights our industry-leading capability to deliver programmable, dynamic 100G services with terabit traffic management, precision switching and fine-grained QoS. We’re excited to be working with leading edge customers and partners like Infinera at the forefront of transforming networking.”

Live Demonstration

See the live demonstration on the SC’15 show floor at Corsa’s booth #364 and at Infinera’s booth #3102.

About Cloud Xpress

The Infinera Cloud Xpress leverages Infinera’s unique photonic integrated circuit technology to support up to one terabit per second of input and output bandwidth in just two RUs with very low power. With its small form factor and low power consumption, Cloud Xpress delivers a full 500G super-channel of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) line-side bandwidth over 150 km without any need for additional multiplexers or amplifiers and up to 600 km with an amplified line system. Cloud Xpress also enables efficient scaling with simple provisioning and open interfaces to plug into existing cloud provisioning systems using open SDN application programming interfaces (APIs). Instant Bandwidth™ allows the activation of WDM bandwidth in 100 Gb/s increments via a few clicks of a mouse enabling rapid scale to meet continued customer demands.

Infinera introduced the Cloud Xpress family in 2014 delivering a cloud-optimized WDM solution to cloud service providers, Internet content providers, Internet Exchange service providers and other large-scale datacenter operators. Infinera recently expanded the Cloud Xpress family by shipping Cloud Xpress with 100 GbE, offering customers the choice of 10 GbE, 40 GbE and 100 GbE client interfaces to meet their specific requirements. Infinera also recently introduced the XT-500, which provides a compact WDM interconnect solution for longer distances up to 4,000 km. The XT-500 is also being demonstrated at SC15 as part of the SCinet live show network.

About DP6400

The Corsa DP6400 Performance SDN Switch platform includes a variety of configurations of nx100G SDN switches which operate at full line-rate and have the key features needed to work at SDN scale. For data center interconnect, WAN edge, aggregation and optimization of 100G bandwidth, network architects can implement fully programmable SDN networking which can manipulate traffic at per-packet level using the precision flow forwarding capability of the DP6400 platform. WAN-scale traffic engineering is available on all Corsa Performance SDN switches as well as advanced SDN traffic management such as dynamic, programmable metering and QoS.

For networks to evolve with changing traffic patterns and needs, the Corsa architecture within the DP6400 platform features a reconfigurable datapath and the possibility for bandwidth expansion. Architects can soft program new applications or network functions that might not currently be anticipated without needing new product releases or new hardware. The result is a flexible, scalable, open SDN switch that offers line-rate precision forwarding for any size of network deployment.
