ISC Announces 2017 Research Paper Session

April 5, 2017

FRANKFURT, Germany, April 5, 2017 — The organizers of the ISC High Performance conference are pleased to announce the 22 research papers that have been accepted for presentation at the ISC 2017 Research Paper Session. The session will run over three days, starting Monday, June 19.

All submissions were double-blind peer reviewed based on their novelty, fundamental insights and potential for long-term contribution. The process was headed by program chair, Dr. Pavan Balaji of Argonne National Laboratory, and deputy chair, Prof. Dr. David Keyes from KAUST.

Here are the selected papers. The first two on the list have been shortlisted for the Hans Meuer Award.

  • An Overview of MPI Characteristics of Exascale Proxy Applications
  • Designing Dynamic and Adaptive MPI Point-to-Point Communication Protocols for Efficient Overlap of Computation and Communication
  • Extreme Event Analysis in Next Generation Simulation Architectures
  • Neuromapp: a Mini-Application Framework to Improve Neural Simulators
  • Alleviating I/O Interference through Workload-Aware Striping and Load-Balancing on Parallel File Systems
  • EvoGraph: On-The-Fly Efficient Mining of Evolving Graphs on GPU
  • Fully-Resolved Simulations of Dune Formation in Riverbeds
  • The Investigation of the ARMv7 and Intel Haswell Architectures Suitability for Performance and Energy-Aware Computing
  • Global Extensible Open Power Manager: A Vehicle for HPC Community Collaboration Toward Co-Designed Energy Management Solutions
  • Gearshifft – The FFT Benchmark Suite for Heterogeneous Platforms
  • Tile Low Rank Cholesky Factorization for Climate/Weather Modeling Applications on Manycore Architectures
  • Fast Matrix-Free Discontinuous Galerkin Kernels on Modern Computer Architectures
  • Metrics for Energy-Aware Software Optimisation
  • Incremental SVM on Intel Xeon Phi Processors
  • Accelerating Seismic Simulations using the Intel Xeon Phi Knights Landing Processor
  • A Framework for Out of Memory SVD Algorithms
  • A New Parallel Research Kernel to Expand Research on Dynamic Load-Balancing Capabilities
  • An Analysis of Core-and Chip-Level Architectural Features in Four Generations of Intel Server Processors
  • EDGE: Extreme Scale Fused Seismic Simulations with the Discontinuous Galerkin Method
  • Diagnosing Performance Variations in HPC Applications Using Machine Learning
  • LAMMPS’ PPPM Long-Range Solver for the Second Generation Xeon Phi
  • Communication Reducing Algorithms for Distributed Hierarchical N-Body Problems with Boundary Distributions

All accepted research papers will be published in the Springer’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The papers can be downloaded from Springer’s website for free for a limited period of time after ISC 2017.

The Hans Meuer Award

The research papers selected as finalists for the Hans Meuer Award this year focus on communication characteristics, and improving communication protocols of message passing interface (MPI) respectively.

MPI has over time evolved as the de-facto HPC standard for node-to-node communication, and it is well-suited to serve as proxy for an analysis of communication characteristics of exascale proxy applications. In their paper titled “An Overview of MPI Characteristics of Exascale Proxy Applications,” authors Benjamin Klenk and Prof. Holger Froening of Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg discuss a number of these characteristics, like time spent in certain operations, point-to-point versus collective communication, message sizes and rates, and how applications use MPI to exploit node-level parallelism.

Dr. Hari Subromoni, Sourav Chakraborty and Prof. Dhabaleswar Panda, from The Ohio State University, authored “Designing Dynamic and Adaptive MPI Point-to-Point Communication Protocols for Efficient Overlap of Computation and Communication,” in which they propose an adaptive protocol design that dynamically optimizes the communication behavior of the application at runtime.

Both teams will present their papers at the research paper award session on Monday, June 19 to the general audience and a small committee that will decide the winning paper. The winner will be announced and awarded the following day in conjunction with the Tuesday keynote.

The Hans Meuer Award has been introduced in memory of the late Dr. Hans Meuer, general chair of the ISC conference from 1986 through 2014, and co-founder of the TOP500 project.

The Gauss Award winner will also hold their presentation on Monday, at the research paper award session.

Register Early and Save

Those attending the conference should register before May 10 to reap the benefits of the early-bird registration fees, which is more than 45 percent lower than the onsite fees.

About ISC High Performance

First held in 1986, ISC High Performance is the world’s oldest and Europe’s most important conference and networking event for the HPC community. It offers a strong five-day technical program focusing on HPC technological development and its application in scientific fields, as well as its adoption in commercial environments.

Over 400 hand-picked expert speakers and 150 exhibitors, consisting of leading research centers and vendors, will greet attendees at ISC High Performance. A number of events complement the Monday – Wednesday keynotes, including the Distinguished Speaker Series, the Industry Track, The Machine Learning Track, Tutorials, Workshops, the Research Paper Sessions, Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) Sessions, Research Poster, the PhD Forum, Project Poster Sessions and Exhibitor Forums.
