Keynote Speakers Announced for Leverage Big Data 2016 Summit on “Establishing ROI in the Big Data Frontier”

May 5, 2016

SAN DIEGO, Calif., May 5 — The Leverage Big Data 2016 summit, the market-leading, live hosted summit aimed at exploring the panoply of Big Data phenomena and how businesses are leveraging these technologies to establish ROI, today announced the final lineup of end-user speakers for its summit program aimed at arming senior technology business executives in cross-vertical corporate organizations with practical knowledge on everything from streaming analytics, real time data, data integration and governance to storage and compute.

Leverage Big Data 2016, scheduled for June 5-7, 2016, at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort & Spa in North San Diego, California, is an exclusive, invitation-only, hosted summit designed for senior business and data technology professionals who want to understand how current and future Big Data technology trends will impact their business vision and strategies.  This summit will offer strategic-level insights into what enterprise leaders should do to harness Big Data technology solutions for maximum business value.

The program fosters community and discussion, including educational keynote tracks with open dialogue segues, boardroom case-study sessions with cross-vertical peer groups, and one-on-one solutions briefings with leading suppliers. Executives will leave armed with information and ideas on how to further their strategy and best maximize their returns for their own corporate Big Data investments.

Leverage Big Data 2016 Keynotes Include:

  • Operationalizing Big Data at Thomson Reuters – Building Value Through Data
  • Speaker: Asif Alam, Global Business Director, Thomson Reuters

Today’s enterprise gathers and stores all kinds of data in hopes of one day extracting the information necessary for the next big breakthrough. But any insights gleaned should not exist in a vacuum. To succeed in this big data world, one must put these insights into use and operationalize them – and that sometimes requires different technologies that exist outside of the traditional data center operations. In this keynote presentation, Asif Alam, Global Business Director at Thomson Reuters, examines successful models for his organization that have created new value and driven new results.

  • State of the State – Real Time Data : How Netflix Built a 1T/day Stream Processing Cloud Platform (Keystone) in a Year
  • Speaker: Peter Bakas, Director of Engineering, Cloud Platform Engineering, Netflix

Creating efficiencies that maximize results, minimize costs, and increase returns is important in today’s business/data environment. As data volumes grow, as the time-to-insight window shrinks, and as technology continues to improve, many companies who wish to remain competitive will have no choice but to adopt real-time analytics. Netflix is blazing trails, and has quickly moved to build a stream processing cloud platform called Keystone, which processes over 1 trillion events per day with at-least once processing semantics in the cloud. In this keynote presentation, Peter Bakas, Director of Engineering, Cloud Platform Engineering at Netflix will explore how they have modified and leveraged Kafka, Samza, Docker, and Linux at scale to implement a multi-tenant pipeline in the Amazon AWS cloud within a year. Bakas will discuss the hows and whys of Keystone and the organizational investment required in developing real time solutions, including the financial resources and human capital. Bakas will also discuss what is next in Keystone’s evolution.

  • Data Integration and Governance for Big Data with Apache Avro
  • Speaker: Barbara Eckman, Principal Data Architect, Comcast

Big Data solutions like NoSQL databases and data lakes make it easy for anyone to contribute data to the enterprise data store.  Integrating previously siloed data streams with other sources across the enterprise makes it possible to uncover otherwise hidden trends, anomalies, and powerful predictors of business successes and failures.  But data integration requires: 1) discovering the disparate data streams that are available; 2) understanding the meaning of the data; 3) determining whether it is safe to join datasets, or whether doing so will create “frankendata”; and 4) methods for recognizing which schema changes are compatible, and which will break downstream consumers’ applications.   This talk will describe how Comcast is using Apache Avro to meet these data governance needs, the challenges that we have faced along the way, and methods we have found to address these challenges.

Leverage Big Data 2016 Panels Include:

Operationalizing Data Science – Strategies for Leveraging Big Data

  • Moderator: Alex Woodie – Managing Editor, Datanami
  • Tassos Sarbanes – Data Architect, Credit Suisse
