LLNL, NNSA to Dedicate New Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory

Jan. 15, 2020 — Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will host a dedication ceremony and media tour of the Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory (AML), a state-of-the-art collaborative facility situated in the recently expanded Livermore Valley Open Campus (LVOC).

Leaders from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), industry partner representatives and Laboratory experts in advanced manufacturing and 3D printing will attend the event.

The Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory (AML), a state-of-the-art collaborative facility situated in the recently expanded Livermore Valley Open Campus (LVOC), is designed to merge LLNL’s science and engineering expertise with academia and industry, creating public-private partnerships that address manufacturing challenges. The $10 million, 14,000-square-foot AML is designed to merge LLNL’s science and engineering expertise with academia and industry, creating public-private partnerships that address manufacturing challenges. Through some of the world’s most sophisticated advanced and additive manufacturing (3D printing) equipment, LLNL’s developments in unique materials, lasers and optics, new manufacturing processes and access to the Lab’s unparalleled high-performance computing (HPC) modeling and simulation capabilities, the AML will help LLNL’s private sector collaborators accelerate innovation and reduce production costs and time, while at the same time positively impacting mission-relevant projects in the energy sector, national security and other applications.

The AML, which currently hosts eight industry partners, features a large 5,000-square-foot wet lab for new process development, 3D printing, materials research, chemical work and other activities. A 5,000-square-foot instrument lab contains industrial-sized manufacturing machines, as well as leading-edge metal 3D-printing research systems and nanomanufacturing capabilities. Bisecting the two labs is a viewing corridor allowing visitors to observe ongoing research. The AML also houses a conference room and shared work areas to stimulate collaborative engagements.

The dedication will begin at 10 a.m. in the Lab’s High Performance Computing Innovation Center (HPCIC) before moving to the AML facility. Media are invited to attend to hear from leadership from the National Nuclear Security Administration, LLNL and industry guests. The speakers will be followed by a tour of the AML facility, where subject matter experts will discuss ongoing collaborative projects with partners such as General Electric and Aerotech, as well as Bay Area-based companies Vector Atomic and ArtVeoli. Additional opportunities for interviews will be provided on an as-needed basis.

The Dedication Ceremony will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020 (HPCIC Bldg. 6475) at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23 and the Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory tour (Bldg. 655) will be held at 11:00 a.m at the High Performance Computing Innovation Center, Livermore Valley Open Campus (off Greenville Road).
