WASHINGTON, D.C., May 1, 2018 – Dr. Manish Parashar, office director for the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure(OAC) at the National Science Foundation (NSF), will be the keynote speaker on Tuesday, May 8 at 3:15 p.m. PDT duringthe 2018 Internet2 Global Summit in San Diego. He will discuss “Realizing a Cyberinfrastructure Ecosystem that Transforms Science.”
Recent years are witnessing dramatic changes in the nature and requirements of science applications, in the scale and pervasiveness of data, and in the landscape of technologies and resources. The OAC’s overarching mission is to conceptualize, design and implement the advanced cyberinfrastructure that is critical to the advancement of all areas of science and engineering research and education. Dr. Parashar will present an overview of OAC and its programs, investments, and vision for evolving programs and priorities to transform science in the 21st century.
“We are truly delighted and honored that Dr. Parashar will be sharing with us his perspectives and future plans in his new role at NSF as the Director of the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure,” said Howard Pfeffer, president and CEO of Internet2. “Dr. Parashar’s keynote will be a tremendous addition to the Global Summit program as we collectively envision how the research cyberinfrastructure ecosystem can evolve and adapt to dramatic changes in technologies and resources in order to continue supporting research and scientific scholarship. With the NSF’s Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure leadership in the exploration, development and provisioning of advanced cyberinfrastructure resources, facilities, and services, NSF plays a vital role in our collective support for the research and education community.”
Dr. Parashar joined NSF from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where he is currently a distinguished professorand the founding director of the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute and the Applied Software Systems Laboratory. He also serves as full member of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and is a visiting professor in the faculty of business, computing, and law at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.
Most recently, he co-led strategic planning efforts in research computing at Rutgers and served as the interim associate vice president of research computing between 2015 and 2016, overseeing the establishment of the Rutgers Office of Advanced Research Computing.
Previously, Dr. Parashar served as program director in the then-office of cyberinfrastructure at NSF between 2009 and 2011, managing a research portfolio that spanned software sustainability, computational and data-enabled science and engineering, and cloud computing. Among his accomplishments was leading the establishment of the crosscutting software infrastructure for sustained innovation program.
The 2018 Internet2 Global Summit meeting will convene research and education technology leaders from May 6-9 at theMarriott Marquis San Diego Marina hotel, and is co-hosted by CENIC, the University of California San Diego, and San Diego State University.
It will feature two keynote addresses, presentations from noted subject-matter experts, and sessions focused on advancednetworks and trusted infrastructure, identity, federation and access management, and solutions for researchers with the goal of benefiting the entire research and education ecosystem.
