OpenStack Board Elects Tencent as Platinum Member of the Foundation

AUSTIN, Texas, April 25, 2018 — The Board of Directors of the OpenStack Foundation (OSF) has approved Tencent as a Platinum Member, the highest level of investment and commitment to the Foundation. Tencent is the No. 3 internet company worldwide and uses OpenStack to power many of its popular applications, including WeChat, as well as power its external private cloud services used by many government and industry customers across China. 

In November 2017, Tencent won the exclusive Superuser award for its case study using OpenStack to power WeChat and other popular internet services. External customers of Tencent TStack private cloud include the Public Security Department of YunNan Province, People’s Government of Xiamen City and HBIS Group of TangSteel Company.

Tencent developers have contributed code to multiple OpenStack projects, including Freezer, where they have a core developer, Kolla, LOCI, Nova, OpenStack-Ansible and Oslo. Nine Tencent team members have taken the Certified OpenStack Administrator exam. Tencent also supported the launch of Kata Containers, managed by the OSF, and is integrating OpenStack Keystone identity service and OpenStack Cinder block storage with its container service.

“As one of the largest users of OpenStack in China, Tencent not only widely deploys and uses OpenStack internally, but also benefits from OpenStack and its advantage to integrate a large set of PaaS and SaaS developed by Tencent which have been used successfully in our products,” said Robyn Liu, vice president of Tencent Cloud. “Tencent creates and maintains such a platform as an integrated solution, which is now applied in different areas such as government, enterprise, hospital, education, etc. It’s a great honor for Tencent to join the OpenStack Foundation; Tencent is willing to bring our expertise and contribution in order to promote and develop the whole open source ecosystem.”

The Tencent team is active across many open source communities and will help further the OSF goal for cross-project integration. Tencent is a Premier Sponsor at the upcoming OpenStack Summit Vancouver, May 21-24, and a Diamond Sponsor at the upcoming OpenInfra Days China, June 20-21 in Beijing.

Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OSF, said, “As the OpenStack software and ecosystem has matured, it’s great to see large OpenStack users joining at the highest level of membership and supporting the community. This is an important step as the community continues to evolve and OpenStack adoption surpasses 10 million compute cores worldwide.”

The OSF Board evaluates new potential members based on their strategic commitment to open infrastructure and contributions to relevant communities, as well as diversity of company size, location and industry. Platinum membership is capped at eight members, and Gold membership is limited to twenty four. With the addition of Tencent, all Platinum positions are filled. In addition to Tencent, Platinum Members are AT&T, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Rackspace, Red Hat and SUSE. There are 21 Gold Members, including 99Cloud, Canonical, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Cisco, City Network, Dell EMC, Deutsche Telekom, EasyStack, FiberHome, Fujitsu, H3C, Hitachi, Inspur, inwinSTACK, Mirantis, NEC, NetApp, UnitedStack and ZTE.
