June 25 — SGI, a global leader in high-performance solutions for compute, data analytics and data management, has announced that Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), has chosen SGI to provide high-performance computing solutions to accelerate its research and development in subsurface imaging for enhancing the probability of success in its upstream businesses.
Established in 1974, PETRONAS is Malaysia’s fully integrated oil and gas multinational company. It is ranked among the largest corporations on Fortune Global 500, PETRONAS’ integrated value chain spans from exploration to marketing, logistics to technological infrastructures, with operations in over 50 countries around the world.
PETRONAS has procured a SGI ICE X system incorporating graphic processing unit (GPU) accelerators with a total performance of 150 teraflops and SGI InfiniteStorage 17500 high performance storage of 2.3 petabytes to support its research and development capabilities in subsurface imaging.
The computing technology solutions will provide PETRONAS with the ability to reduce the time needed to analyze voluminous quantities of seismic data with much more precise images of the subsurface. This is made possible by greater computing power, speed and storage capacity.
SGI will deliver the solutions to PETRONAS through its partners Intergriti Padu Sdn Bhd and local distributor, SGI (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
“SGI is deeply aware of the increasingly complex challenges oil and gas companies are facing as they move into more remote and difficult environments to find and extract oil,” said Jorge Titinger, president and CEO, SGI. “SGI is uniquely positioned in the industry to support the compute-intensive simulations needed for oil and gas companies to remain competitive today. We are looking forward to continuing our work with PETRONAS as the company evolves and grows its high performance computing requirements.”
