IT Pros Vote 2016 Server & Database Brand Leaders

SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 23 — IT Brand Pulse, a trusted source for research, data and analysis about data center infrastructure, today announced the results of the recent IT brand leader surveys covering thirteen Server and Database products.

IT Pros from around the world responded to the independent, non-sponsored survey in February 2016, and were asked which vendors they perceive as the leader in the following categories:

  • Enterprise Rackmount Server
  • Server Virtualization
  • Enterprise Blade Server
  • Enterprise Cluster OS
  • NoSQL Database
  • White Box Server
  • Enterprise Server OS
  • In-Memory Database
  • Enterprise Server Processor
  • Enterprise Server LOM & MLOM
  • SQL Database
  • Integrated System

“This round of brand leader surveys is highlighted by the breakthrough of Red Hat for enterprise server OS, previously dominated by Microsoft,” said Frank Berry, CEO and Senior Analyst at IT Brand Pulse. “And, in our first survey for NoSQL databases, Amazon Web Service has established early incumbency as the brand leader over a large group of popular database vendors.”

Survey Highlights

For the sixth consecutive year, HPE was the respondents’ Market Leader choice for Enterprise Blade Server and turned in a repeat win in the Dense Low Power Microserver category. With the Market Leader title in hand, HPE also captured Performance and Reliability for Enterprise Blade Server; but gave up Price, Service & Support, and Innovation to Dell. Cisco was the second place Market Leader, followed by Dell.

HPE is continuing to invest in the BladeSystem architecture, including a unified API through HPE OneView, which provides customers with a path to composable infrastructure.”

HPE’s Moonshot swept Dense Low-Power Microserver, coming up as the Market, Price, Performance, Reliability, Service & Support, and Innovation leader, ahead of all-around runners-up Supermicro and Quanta, respectively.

Microsoft pulled off a set of Operating System Market Leader victories in both Enterprise Server OS (fifth year) and Enterprise Cluster OS. While the IT professional community also tapped Microsoft as the Service & Support Leader for Enterprise Server OS, they dealt the majority of the leader awards in this product category—Price, Performance, Reliability, and Innovation—to Red Hat (the Market runner-up, ahead of IBM).

In Enterprise Cluster OS, Microsoft split the votes evenly, taking Market, Innovation, and Service & Support, with Red Hat commanding Price, Performance, and Reliability. The remaining Market Leader positions mirrored Server OS: Red Hat in second, IBM, third.

From a field packed with 18 vendor options, Cisco led the way in this year’s new combined convergence category, Integrated System. Cisco was chosen by IT pros as Market, Performance, Reliability, and Innovation leader; leaving Dell to receive the Price award, and IBM (runner-up Market Leader) with Service & Support. EMC (VCE) earned the number three Market Leader position.

By evolving the data center with integrated systems that are enabled by Cisco, enterprises can deploy and scale applications faster to drive the revenue side of the business, while reducing risk and TCO.”

Dell upset four-time champion HPE in 2016 by walking away with the six leader titles in Enterprise Rackmount Servers: Market, Price, Performance, Reliability, Service & Support, and Innovation. HPE captured the overall number two spot, followed by third-place Market Leader, Cisco.

In a newly-added survey category this year—White Box Server—Dell continued its leadership in the minds of IT pro voters with results copying those of Rackmount Server: Dell as Market, Price, Performance, Reliability, Service & Support, and Innovation leader, HPE in second and Super Micro, third in the Market Leader race.

This acknowledgement is a reflection of the customer insights that fuel innovation in PowerEdge Servers and our rich service capabilities,” said Brian Payne, Executive Director PowerEdge Server Solutions.

Intel, the other winner of a double category sweep in this survey, once again prevailed in Enterprise Server Processors (fifth consecutive time) and Enterprise Server LOM & MLOM (three straight years). Intel Xeon was selected as the Market, Price, Performance, Reliability, Service & Support, and Innovation leader for Server Processor, and, with a staggering 80% of the Market Leader votes, had little trouble topping IBM Power and AMD’s Opteron (in that order).

In a much tighter outcome, Intel stayed on top of the Enterprise Server LOM & MLOM leader board to take Market, Price, Performance, Reliability, Service & Support, and Innovation titles. The number two and three Market Leader slots flipped from last year: QLogic moved up to second this time around and Broadcom/Avago dropped to third.

Amazon Web Services interrupted Oracle’s triple database leader attempt, as respondents picked AWS to be the Market Leader for NoSQL Database, as well as for Price, Performance, and Innovation. Microsoft (the third-place Market Leader behind Oracle) gained both Reliability and Service & Support honors.

Oracle, whose name has long been synonymous in the database world, came close to dominating Market leadership in the three database products represented in this survey. However, when polls closed, Oracle had to settle for Market Leader in two: In-Memory Database and SQL Database. Oracle also added Performance, Reliability, Service & Support and Innovation titles for In-Memory Database. Microsoft (chosen Price Leader) and SAP finished as the number two and three Market Leaders.

With regards to SQL Database, Oracle was first in Market (third time), Performance, Reliability, and Innovation, but lost Price and Service & Support awards to Microsoft (who stayed ahead of IBM in the Market Leader results).

VMware, as in previous brand leader surveys, dominated Server Virtualization for 2016 with a six-year-in-a-row sweep of every leader category: Market, Price, Performance, Reliability, Service & Support, and Innovation. Citrix bumped Microsoft down a notch from 2015, placing second and third, accordingly, for Market Leader.

IT Brand Pulse awards are the symbols for brand leadership. Winners are voted by global IT pros in surveys that are independent, non-sponsored research. The surveys are designed to measure the pulse of brand leadership in specific product categories. Within each product category, respondents choose the overall market leader, as well as the leader in price, performance, reliability, service and support, and innovation. Respondents are provided with a category description at the start of each product section, a randomized choice of vendor answers, and the ability to write-in a vendor, if not listed.
