Nov. 9, 2020 — RAIDIX, a storage software company, has presented results of its massive testing and research work, aiming to break the barrier of 10 mln IOps per RAID. Report on the findings, that include some of the newest features employed in company’s ERA technology, was introduced at SDC 2020, the largest conference for developers of storage solutions.
Outstanding results of the team work were delivered to the storage community by Sergey Platonov, Chief Strategist and ERA product owner at RAIDIX. Tests and tuning of the storage system were carried out earlier this year and preceded the ERA 3.1 release, though major part of the presented findings will be included into the next official release of ERA technology, scheduled for the end of 2020.
The issue, that lies behind the research, is wide-known, yet rarely addressed: existing software solutions for NVMe devices significantly restrain their performance potential. Storage subsystem, equipped with standard software, delivers only up to 50% speed out of maximum drives performance, though in theory these components are able to provide tens of millions of IOps and tens of GBps per single server.
The purpose of the study, which Sergey spoke about at the conference, was to break the threshold of 10 mln IOps and try to show the full potential of the fastest drives at the market. The report examines the performance of standard storage devices and describes the steps that the RAIDIX team followed in order to tune the test system and get the aimed result.
In the course of the research, the team saw obvious necessity in developing a new software RAID, which later was transformed into the ERA technology and since that has been shared with the storage community for free (for limited number of drives). Evolution of ERA continues with ambitious plans to employ high-performance persistent memory in the future.
You are welcome to watch video record of the research and the slides of Sergey Platonov’s presentation at SDC 2020.
Storage Developer Conference (SDC) is the largest meeting of storage community arranged annually by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). Due to restrictions this year’s conference was turned into an online event and took part at the end of September 2020. During the three days of the conference, more than 140 speakers from all over the world presented their talks on technologies and developments for data storage.
