ScaleMP Collaborates with Indiana University

CUPERTINO, Calif., Nov. 12 — ScaleMP, the leader in virtualization solutions for high-end computing, announced that the company has entered into a collaboration agreement with Indiana University to add very large memory and shared memory systems to the FutureGrid Project.

“By implementing ScaleMP’s vSMP Foundation on a number of our servers, we can give all of our users access to terabytes of easily accessible memory in order to maximize the amount and types of simulations performed,” said Geoffrey Fox, Associated Dean for Research at Indiana University. “All of our user base can focus on their science and obtaining meaningful results, without worrying about learning new and complicated programming APIs.”

The FutureGrid Project makes it possible for researchers to tackle complex research challenges in computer science related to the use and security of grids and clouds. These include topics range from authentication, authorization, scheduling, virtualization, middleware design, interface design and cybersecurity, to the optimization of grid- and cloud-enabled computational schemes for researchers in astronomy, chemistry, biology, engineering, atmospheric science and epidemiology. The project team provides a significant new experimental computing grid and cloud test bed, named FutureGrid, to the research community, together with user support for third-party researchers conducting experiments on FutureGrid.

ScaleMP is working with Indiana University to enable all researchers to take advantage of the simplicity of using shared memory and large memory systems. For applications and algorithms that are not easily modified to run on a cluster, a shared memory system allows for development and execution without the need to focus on distributed programming application programming interfaces. In addition, by giving users access to large memory systems, more detailed simulations can be performed or larger databases can be analyzed.
