Aug. 12, 2022 — Peter Rose, director of the Structural Bioinformatics Laboratory at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego, was recently presented with a team award from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)–noting his work in the COVID-19 Common Data Elements Working Groups.
Specifically, Rose has been working with the RADx-rad Discoveries and Data Coordinating Center (DCC), a partnership between UC San Diego and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, to facilitate data collection, harmonization and sharing–as well as to provide standardized viral samples and testing protocols to support RADx-rad awardees.
“I was surprised to get this award as we were just doing our jobs,” Rose said. “It has been exciting to learn about the new technologies being developed for COVID-19 diagnosis and to contribute to this effort.”
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched the RADx Radical program to support innovative, non-traditional diagnostic approaches to address gaps in COVID-19 testing and surveillance. The program is expected to produce more efficient and effective ways to identify the current SARSCoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, as well as its variants, and to develop tools to detect and combat emerging infectious diseases. It will also promote other ways to help diagnose and monitor COVID-19, and it will use AI and other advanced techniques to build predictive models.
