Seagate Introduces ClusterStor G200 Spectrum Scale

CUPERTINO, Calif., Nov. 17 — Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX) today introduced the Seagate ClusterStor G200 Spectrum Scale, high performance computing (HPC)-class storage solution to help data-driven enterprises manage massive storage growth. The G200 integrates with Seagate’s new 3.5-inch ClusterStor HPC drive specifically designed for the HPC market, highlighting the company’s commitment to industry-leading HPC storage solutions.

The explosion of data is affecting all facets of how organizations do business — and straining IT operations. As the first Seagate ClusterStor system supporting the popular IBM Spectrum Scale file system (formerly known as General Parallel File System – GPFS), the G200 features a wide range of enterprise-class features and tools ideal for helping manage this data growth. It also enables high-performance data access critical to industries ranging from life sciences, to automotive and aerospace design, to financial services among a wide range of technical computing applications.

“HPC storage is no longer limited to just academia or to defense and intelligence applications, as a growing number of industries are grappling with how to manage massive amounts of data previously found in only those traditional HPC areas. The needs of these data-driven enterprises are different, however. They need a way to easily manage workflows and data access without interruption,” said Ken Claffey, vice president and general manager, Seagate HPC systems business. “Seagate’s G200 builds on the proven ClusterStor architecture to provide purpose-built solutions specifically engineered for applications where efficient and scalable workflows are critical for accelerating their time to results.”

Leveraging the award-winning ClusterStor engineered storage architecture, the G200 has been custom-designed from the ground up for HPC, with everything from disk drives to the enclosures and software tuned for HPC performance and scalability. The G200 storage system unit is delivered with 84 slots for 3.5-inch HDD and SSD in a 5U enclosure with embedded storage controllers. The G200 and the L300 – Seagate’s new Lustre-based system – are the first enterprise HPC systems to deploy Seagate’s new ClusterStor HPC Drive. The 3.5-inch drive supports up to 4 terabytes (TB) and features a sequential data rate of 300 megabytes (MB) per second, and 35 percent faster random performance than any other 3.5-inch drive, making it ideal for the broadest range of data ingest and access needs of HPC applications.

The system comes pre-configured, tested and ready to deploy, so organizations can quickly have it up and running in hours to maximize productivity. In addition, users benefit from ClusterStor’s reduced footprint, compared to traditional external file-serving nodes, which helps lower power, cooling and administrative costs without compromising performance. And ClusterStor for IBM Spectrum Scale continues to utilize Grid RAID, Seagate’s declustered RAID feature addition that delivers rebuild times up to 400 percent faster than legacy RAID systems.

The ClusterStor family is built on Seagate’s field-proven enterprise-class storage architecture, Lustre, and now IBM Spectrum Scale. Combining superior performance with ultra-efficient scalability, the ClusterStor family includes ClusterStor L300, ClusterStor A200, ClusterStor G200, ClusterStor 9000, ClusterStor 1500, and the ClusterStor Secure Data Appliance.
