Feb. 18, 2020 — The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic for Investment and Computerization announced a call for the national project “National Competence Center for High-Performance Computing” from the workshop of the Center of Joint Activities of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS).
The Joint Action Center of SAS launched the national project “National Competence Center for High Performance Computing,” which focuses on the purchase of HPC technologies for scientists and entrepreneurs in the competence center itself. The closing date for the invitation is October 3, 2020.
The project will span a 24 month period to increase the innovation capacity of especially small and medium-sized enterprises in the digital economy. To this end, Slovakia is investing an estimated €3,199,251 ($3.5 million).
Typical uses of HPC technology include various engineering simulations, material research, drug design, or weather forecasting.
The project aims to build an infrastructure within the emerging National Competence Center. This will provide high-performance computing hardware and software tools designed for high-performance computing. This will create a unique space in Slovakia, the HPC Lab, in which a team of experts will serve and educate users and IT specialists from the ranks of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as public administration organizations and academia.
The HPC Lab will support HPC technology in Slovak companies, how to transfer it to the development of new products and use it in optimizing solutions and streamlining operational strategies. The Center of Joint Activities of the SAS invests in the project many years of experience with the operation of HPC and human capital in the form of its experts.
The European Commission also considers high performance computing to be a key technology that promotes innovation in industry, basic and applied research. This is evidenced by the establishment of the European Joint Undertaking for HPC (EuroHPC JU) by the Member States, to which Slovakia joined in 2019. The use of HPC technology in our country envisages the Action Plan of Digital Transformation of Slovakia for 2019 – 2022.
The invitation to the above national project is published on the websites www.vicepremier.gov.sk and www.partnerskadohoda.gov.sk
