UC San Diego Center for Microbiome Innovation Announces Panasas as Corporate Member

March 14, 2018

SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 14, 2018 — The UC San Diego Center for Microbiome Innovation (CMI) announces that Panasas, a leading provider of performance scale-out network-attached storage, has joined CMI’s Corporate Member Board and has donated a 500TB Panasas ActiveStor high-performance storage solution to support the acceleration of microbiome research. ActiveStor drives productivity and accelerates time to results with ultrafast streaming performance, true linear scalability, enterprise-grade reliability and unparalleled ease of management.

“We are grateful for the support of Panasas,” said Center Faculty Director Rob Knight. “The advanced ActiveStor data storage solution we now have at our disposal  will greatly enhance the activities of the Center.”

The Center for Microbiome Innovation exists to inspire, nurture and sustain vibrant collaborations between UC San Diego Microbiome experts and many industry partners. The Center encompasses a large range of expertise in microbiome sampling, a broad range of technologies (metagenomics, metabolomics, meta transcriptomics) and data analysis using high performance algorithms, machine learning and modeling. The ultimate goal is to increase knowledge of the impact of the microbiome on human health and the environment, with an aim to commercialize innovative solutions and disease treatments.

“We are honored to join CMI’s Corporate Board and to support their mission of accelerating microbiome research to improve human health and benefit the environment,” said Jim Donovan, chief sales and marketing officer at Panasas. “Innovation in life sciences depends on the ability to rapidly store, retrieve and analyze unprecedented volumes of information. Scientists and researchers choose ActiveStor to accelerate their workflows and effectively manage large data sets for streamlined collaboration.”

Panasas will have the opportunity to influence the research directions of the center by holding two seats on the Corporate Member Board, as well as having regular communication with the center team of experts.

About the UC San Diego Center for Microbiome Innovation

The objective of the Center for Microbiome Innovation (CMI) is to accelerate microbiome research and understanding, through partnerships with industry sponsors. Together we will develop novel tools and methods to improve human health and benefit the environment by analyzing and manipulating microbiomes — the distinct and diverse communities of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that live within and around us. This is a multidisciplinary center with access to all the latest omics tools (genomics, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metabolomics, multiplex proteomics), processing hundreds of thousands of samples each year and analyzing and collecting data for some of the largest microbiome cohorts in the world. Applications range from human disease understanding, ag bio, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, environmental research, to consumer goods.

HPC Serves as a ‘Rosetta Stone’ for the Information Age

July 12, 2018

In an age defined and transformed by its data, several large-scale scientific instruments around the globe might be viewed as a ‘mother lode’ of precious data. With names seemingly created for a ‘techno-speak’ glossary, these interferometers, cyclotrons, sequencers, solenoids, satellite altimeters, and cryo-electron microscopes are churning out data in previously unthinkable and seemingly incomprehensible quantities -- billions, trillions and quadrillions of bits and bytes of electro-magnetic code.
