Virtual ICM Seminar with Andrew Turpin, ‘Supporting Digital Research Methods: The Melbourne Experience,’ to Be Held Apr. 22

April 19, 2021 — The Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) at the University of Warsaw invites enthusiasts of HPC and all people interested in challenging topics in Computer and Computational Science to the ICM Seminar in Computer and Computational Science that will be held on April 22, 2021 (4:00 p.m. CEST), featuring a talk by Andrew Turpin, a professor in computer science at The University of Melbourne, Australia. The event is free.

In this talk (Supporting Digital Research Methods: The Melbourne Experience), Andrew Turpin will discuss the Petascale Campus Initiative, a program at The University of Melbourne to boost access to computational and data management resources for all faculties at the university. Melbourne is a large, comprehensive university, and so balancing the needs of medicine, fine arts, physics, and architecture has its challenges. In addition to hardware, the Initiative is also committed to developing a workforce of data and computer scientists that can support researchers in the academy to make use of digital technology in their research. This workforce (the Melbourne Data Analytics Platform – MDAP) is unique in Australia, and rare in the world, in that it is comprised of academics whose “KPI” are built around supporting research, not necessarily leading independent research. The talk will discuss the journey in establishing MDAP at Melbourne; the challenges and the successes.

Presenter Bio

Andrew Turpin is a professor in computer science at The University of Melbourne, Australia. His research interests are based around applications of algorithmic efficiency to problems such as data compression, text search, analysis of political texts, human vision testing and modelling of the human vision neural pathways. For the last 2.5 years, he has been charged with establishing the Melbourne Data Analytics Platform; a group of academics who specialise in supporting research of others with cutting edge data analysis and computational techniques. Formation of this workforce if also part of a wider initiative at Melbourne to boost HPC, cloud, and data management infrastructure for research, for which Prof Turpin is the academic lead.

Prior to working at Melbourne, he worked at RMIT University (Melbourne), Curtin University (Perth, Australia) and Oregon Health & Science University (Portland, USA). And before embarking on an academic career in computer science, he worked for several years as a trainee actuary with Swiss Re (Australia).

Supercomputing Frontiers Europe

Virtual ICM Seminars in Computer and Computational Science are a continuation of the Supercomputing Frontiers Europe conference, which took place virtually in March 2020 and will be back with the new HPC trends to explore in the summer 2021 (July 19-23). The organizer is the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM), University of Warsaw.

Virtual ICM Seminars in Computer and Computational Science

Since March 2020, over 2,400 people have participated in virtual meetings organized by ICM (SCFE + 14 seminars) from almost all the time zones. The supercomputingfrontiers.eu website with access to the SCFE and seminars’ recordings, has been visited by more than 15k visitors from 122 countries. The organizer of meetings with outstanding scientists is the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling –ICM University of Warsaw.

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) University of Warsaw is involved in interdisciplinary scientific research based on mathematical modeling, computer simulations and modeling, multi-scale and large-scale calculations. The popular meteo.pl weather portal has been established by using ICM computed weather forecasts. ICM researchers study problems related to civil aviation (collaborating with ICAO), modeling of social processes and most recently working on ICM Epidemiological Model for the COVID-19 epidemic in Poland. ICM took part in securing access for Polish scientists to the entire body of scientific literature, including over 8,000 journal titles, by maintaining the Virtual Library of Science. ICM networking team has participated in a number of cutting edge networking solutions, both for high throughput and low latencyrequirements. Recently, ICM engineers have established a production 100Gbps connection over 12,375 4 miles CAE-1 (Collaboration Asia Europe-1) line between Warsaw and Singapore.
