Prof. Dr. Guangwen Yang
Director
National Supercomputer Center at Wuxi
In a short time, China has shown itself to be a supercomputing superpower, claiming both the number one and two spots on the TOP500 list with TaihuLight and Tianhe-2, respectively. Together, the systems represent 19 percent of total list performance (FLOPS), underscoring China’s ascendancy and the power of supercomputing investments.
Spearheading this effort is Prof. Dr. Guangwen Yang, Director of China’s National Supercomputer Center at Wuxi where TaihuLight is installed. Under his guidance, the new generation Sunway TaihuLight features over 125 petaflops (peak), and further distinguished itself by relying solely on Chinese technology to claim TOP500’s top spot.
In addition to directing the National Supercomputer Center at Wuxi, Yang is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology and directs the Institute of High Performance Computing at Tsinghua University. His research areas include parallel algorithms, cloud computing and the earth system model.
