Podcast: Why HPC is Ready for the Cloud

Nov 15, 2015 |

Not surprisingly Tim Carroll is unambiguous about whether HPC is ready for the cloud. It absolutely is says Carroll. He is, after all, VP of Sales and Ecosystem for cloud computing specialist Cycle Computing. Forget the past, he argues. Not only has the enabling technology landscape changed and the problem set expanded (think big data), Read more…

Cycle Computing Orchestrates Cancer Research on Google Cloud

Sep 10, 2015 |

This week HPC cloud software specialist Cycle Computing announced that its full suite of products can now be used to spin up clusters on Google’s cloud platform. As testament to the new partnership, Cycle leveraged Google Compute Engine (GCE) to run a 50,000-core cancer gene analysis workload for the Broad Institute. As Cycle Computing explains, Broad’s Cancer Group approached them Read more…

Cycle Helps HGST Stand Up 70,000 Core AWS Cloud

Nov 11, 2014 |

Cycle Computing CEO Jason Stowe revealed today what is being called the largest Fortune 500 cloud cluster run, performed by HGST, a Western Digital company. HGST’s engineering team was working to identify an optimal advanced drive head design. Essentially, the job involves 1 million simulations for designs based upon 22 different design parameters running on 3 Read more…

Advancing Drug Discovery with HPC Cloud

Jul 10, 2014 |

In order to develop a new drug the average pharmaceutical company spends about one billion dollars over ten years. This is an untenable situation for those with serious illnesses who don’t have the luxury of time. That’s why high-performance computing, which has been shown to dramatically accelerate the pace of discovery, is so critical to the Read more…

Scaling the Super Cloud

Jan 15, 2014 |

“The number one problem we face as humanity is getting people to think outside of the boxes they bought,” says Cycle Computing CEO, Jason Stowe. His company has made big waves and proven that the combination of Amazon servers and their own innovations can open new infrastructure options for users with HPC applications. For instance, Read more…

Cloud HPC Firm Dares Scientists to Ask Big Questions

Aug 20, 2013 |

Cloud-based supercomputing is, theoretically, a great idea, but the trend has not taken off as some in the HPC field believed it would. That isn’t stopping the folks at Cycle Computing, who say its Amazon-based supercomputers are not only helping scientists and researchers get real work done, but freeing their brains to ask the really big questions.

Cycle Computing and the HPC Experiment

Jul 15, 2013 |

In a presentation done with Wolfgang Gentzsch and Burak Yenier in association with the HPC Experiment, Stowe went more into detail about the additional use cases in which Cycle Computing has facilitated HPC experimentation in the cloud. Gentzsch and Yenier also went on to update the HPC experiment, the fourth round of which kicks off this week.

Cycling through Genomics and Other Cloud HPC Applications

Jun 24, 2013 |

HPC in the Cloud caught up with Cycle Computing CEO and Co-Founder Jason Stowe, where he discussed the company’s efforts in aiding Schrodinger, Inc., a company focused on chemical simulation for biotechnical and pharmaceutical purposes, in their efforts as they won Bio-IT World’s best practices award last month.

Utility HPC: What Every Enterprise Can Learn from Utility Supercomputing

Jun 3, 2013 |

Whether your organization’s compute demands warrant 50 cores of HPC, or 50,000 cores, the management challenges are actually quite similar. It turns out that the same management software used to prepare a cluster of 10,000+ cores can actually create small clusters that much more reliably. So what lessons can any Enterprise IT organization learn from the experiences of their larger compute-consuming colleagues?

When Is the Cloud Right for HPC?

Apr 16, 2013 |

For a growing number of non-traditional HPC workloads, the cloud is the place to be.
