Offloading vs. Onloading: The Case of CPU Utilization

Jun 18, 2016 |

One of the primary conversations these days in the field of networking is whether it is better to onload network functions onto the CPU or better to offload these functions to the interconnect hardware. Onloading interconnect technology is easier to build, but the issue becomes the CPU utilization; because the CPU must manage and execute Read more…

Mellanox Advances ‘In-Network Computing’ with ConnectX-5 Adapter

Jun 16, 2016 |

Networking specialist Mellanox has announced ConnectX-5, the next-generation of its 100G InfiniBand and Ethernet adapter line. The company says the new device will help organizations take advantage of real-time data processing for high performance computing (HPC), data analytics, machine learning, national security and ‘Internet of Things’ applications. ConnectX-5 was designed to connect with any computing infrastructure – x86, Power, GPU, ARM, and FPGA – and it employs a variety of offload engines, which can be classified into two camps.

The Ultimate Debate – Interconnect Offloading Versus Onloading

Apr 12, 2016 |

The high performance computing market is going through a technology transition – the Co-Design transition. As has already been discussed in many articles, this transition has emerged in order to solve the performance bottlenecks of today’s infrastructures and applications, performance bottlenecks that were…

Mellanox Readies First 200 Gb/s Silicon Photonics Devices

Mar 22, 2016 |

At the Optical Fiber Conference taking place from March 22-24 in Anaheim, Calif., Mellanox is announcing an “important milestone” on the road to High Data Rate (HDR) 200Gb/s InfiniBand and Ethernet networks. At the trade show, the company is demonstrating 50 Gb/s silicon photonics optical modulators and detectors, which will comprise key elements of 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s LinkX cables and transceivers.

Mellanox Touts Arrival of Intelligent Interconnect

Nov 16, 2015 |

Intelligence and integration are the watchwords of an era in which the insatiable demand for faster, more powerful computers can no longer ride the coattails of a strong Moore’s law. These are also the hallmarks of co-design, an approach that is championed by interconnect fabric vendor Mellanox Technologies and others in the community as essential for supercomputing Read more…

Amazon Web Services Spotlights HPC Options

Aug 11, 2015 |

Despite high initial interest, HPC in the cloud never achieved significant adoption levels, mainly being relegated to low-hanging “pleasingly parallel” fruit and testing or experimental use, however, there are signs of growth on the horizon, according to HPC analysts. “As public clouds acquire stronger HPC capabilities and perform better on a larger set of HPC workloads, they Read more…

Mellanox, IBM, ORNL Spearhead UCX Framework Initiative

Jul 13, 2015 |

Interconnect technology specialist Mellanox announced at ISC today a collaboration to develop a new open-source network communication framework – United Communication X Framework (UCX) – for high- performance and data-centric applications. The effort is intended to provide platform abstractions supporting various communication technologies for “high performance compute, and data platforms” and will help pave the Read more…

IBM, NVIDIA and Mellanox Launch Design Center for HPC

Jul 2, 2015 |

Today’s launch by IBM, NVIDIA, and Mellanox of a new POWER Acceleration and Design Center in Montpellier, France, ratchets up their campaign to attract a wider developer community to the OpenPOWER platform and their efforts to build momentum for the march into the Intel-dominated HPC landscape. The Montpellier-based center is the second of its kind, Read more…

SGI ERI Installation Illustrates Multi-use HPC

May 20, 2015 |

Traditional research and Big Data apps are increasingly run on the same HPC system as lines between their computational requirements blur and demand for dual-use capability grows, said Bob Braham, SGI CMO. He pointed to last month’s ramp up of the latest SGI supercomputer at the Earthquake and Volcano Information Center at the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Read more…

Trans-Continental InfiniBand Charts Exascale Course

Feb 3, 2015 |

Many nations are racing to cross the exascale computing finish line by roughly 2020. Yet the challenges are such that establishing useful exascale computers some 50-100 times faster than today’s leadership machines requires the coordinated efforts of a vast array of stakeholders. At Supercomputing 2014 (SC14), an industry collaboration called InfiniCortex launched with the goal Read more…
