More information has been emerging about Intel’s 48-core single-chip cloud computer system after the company showcased it handiwork in Mountain View. As of now, around 100 institutions and partners (Microsoft and Berkeley are on that list) have access to the SCC. What makes this such a striking development is that it comes hardwired with several of the features that make cloud datacenters attractive, including critical support for message-passing and a packed-based mesh network. According to an Intel spokesperson, “we want to be in the forefront of fostering paralel CPU programming and future processors may very well contain a very large number of cores This system allows developers and researchers to experiment and determine how best to accurately program and exploit each and every core.”
