HPC & AI Wall StreetDec. 2, 2019 — Now it is time to wrap up the PRACE activities during a dynamic week at SC19 from 18 to 22 November 2019 in Denver, Colorado, USA. The PRACE booth was opened with a Welcome Talk by Serge Bogaerts, PRACE Managing Director, on Monday evening. He gave a brief overview of PRACE and invited the visitors to attend the different mini-presentations during the exhibition days at the PRACE booth and to participate in the BoF “European HPC Ecosystem Summit” on Thursday 22 November 2019.
PRACE welcomed more than 300 visitors to its booth and the PRACE booth team informed them about PRACE activities and offerings such as Project Access and the various training possibilities. In addition, PRACE experts and invited speakers provided an interesting overview of PRACE achievements and European HPC projects and infrastructure in their mini-presentations. On Wednesday 20 November the highlight was the HPCwire Editors’ Choice Award, given to PRACE in the following two categories:
- Best Use of HPC in Life Sciences: the award emphasised the work of a French researcher team under the lead of Dr. Luc Bergé which used for their CAPITOL project a PRACE allocation of 24.1 million core hours on GENCI’s Curie machine (hosted at TGCC, CEA, France) to explore by means of different massively parallel numerical codes new physical mechanisms converting ultra-intense laser light into various photon and particle sources ranging from terahertz to X-rays through laser-plasma interactions, which could lead to breakthroughs in high-resolution medical imaging and detection of breast and skin cancer tumors. The award is shared with CEA and GENCI.

Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications, publisher of HPCwire, personally handed the two awards to Serge Bogaerts (PRACE Managing Director), Marjolein Oorsprong (PRACE Communications Officer), Jacques-Charles Lafoucrière (CEA/DAM HPC program Director) and Philippe Lavocat (CEO, GENCI) at the PRACE booth.
A novelty at the PRACE booth this year was the “World of HPC” map where visitors could indicate their home country or city.
Furthermore, PRACE was one of the partners in the Students@SC programme. On Wednesday afternoon the PRACE training experts Volker Weinberg (LRZ), Simon Wong (ICHEC) and Georg Zitzlsberger (IT4Innovations) welcomed the student groups. They gave a brief and to-the-point presentation about PRACE training opportunities to the high school students. Likewise, PRACE was involved for the third time in the SC19 Scavenger Hunt and donated a Samsung Galaxy Tab A to one of the winners.
Once again PRACE co-led the EuroZone initiative together with its partners SurfSARA, BSC, and GÉANT, to increase the visibility European organisations present at the SC19 exhibition.
The EXDCI-2 project again shared the PRACE booth, offering opportunities to international partners to discuss future collaborations. EXDCI-2 also promoted the EuroHPC Summit Week 2020. More information about the latest EXDCI-2 updates can be found here.
