HPC4EnergyInnovation Program Announces Spring 2019 Awards

November 22, 2019

Nov. 22, 2019 — The High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) Program is pleased to announce the recipients of over $3.6 million in federal funding for 12 public/private projects aimed at improving energy production, enhancing or developing new material properties and reducing energy usage in manufacturing. The projects represent the second joint round of funding for the HPCEI Program, the umbrella entity for the HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg), HPC4Materials (HPC4Mtls), and HPC4Mobility programs.

Under the program, each selected industry partner will have access to the national labs’ HPC machines and expertise. Each of the 12 newly selected projects will receive up to $300,000 to support work performed by the national lab partners and allow the partners to use HPC compute cycles.

HPC4EnergyInnovation (HPC4EI) Fall 2019 Solicitation is now open! For additional information visit, the HPC4EI solicitation web page.

HPC4Manufacturing

Seven projects will be funded by the DOE EERE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office are as follows:

  • United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) will partner with ANL to develop innovative and affordable machine learning enabled high-fidelity flow-physics models to be used in the design cycle of a gas turbine engine.
  • General Motors LLC (GM) will partner with ORNL to develop residual stress model for laser-welded dissimilar joints (HSLA/CE steel) for car light-weighting.
  • UTRC in collaboration with SNL will aim to develop a first-principles based simulation framework for predicting deposition of dirt, sand, volcanic ash and other particulates on aero-engine components operating in polluted urban environment.
  • Praxair, Inc. will partner with ORNL to develop a multi-physics 3D CFD model of an Oxygen Transport Membrane (OTM) reactor module.
  • Dow Chemical Company will partner with NREL to model how flow in plastic impacts polymers at a molecular level.
  • Owens Corning & Saint Gobain Ceramics & Plastics., DBA SEFPRO and LLNL will collaborate to optimize the operating conditions in the glass manufacturing process.
  • United Technologies Research Center and LANL will collaborate on developing a multiscale model to predict the mechanical behavior of additively manufactured components, particularly for creep applications.

HPC4Materials

Three projects funded will be by DOE EERE’s Vehicle Technologies Office.

  • PPG Industries, Inc. and LLNL will experimentally test data set of roughly 100 molecules and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations to train an algorithm that predicts corrosion inhibition performance of organic molecules based on a large number of calculable criteria.
  • Sinter Print Inc. dba Elementum 3D will partner with ANL to run HPC simulations to develop a multi-physics model that enhances the control of nucleant formation and solidification structures for improved properties.
  • LM Industries Group, Inc. will partner with ORNL to improve predicting layer profiles to optimize the additive manufacturing process.

HPC4Mobility

Two projects will be funded by DOE EERE’s Vehicle Technologies Office.

  • The City of San Jose Department of Transportation will partner with LBNL to develop e quasi-dynnamic traffic assignment model that runs in compute times of hours for a metropolitan area.
  • The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and ANL will use HPC and modeling to understand interplay between variables affecting CTA’s operations and inform future decisions
