NCSA Receives Honors in 2022 HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards

Nov. 16, 2022 — The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) was recognized for its outstanding achievements in three different domains in the annual HPCwire Readers’  and Editors’ Choice Awards announced at Supercomputing Conference 2022 (SC22) in Dallas on Nov. 14. It’s the 12th consecutive year NCSA has been honored with an HPCwire award.

“These awards exemplify the example NCSA sets as a leader in its field,” stated NCSA Director Bill Gropp. “I’m delighted that NCSA’s culture of excellence and inclusion was recognized by our colleagues and peers. From successfully steering a national cyberinfrastructure program for more than a decade to providing countless opportunities for underrepresented students to learn, train and innovate, NCSA’s vision and innovation further cements its legacy as a luminary in the industry.”

  • Readers’ Choice: Best Use of High Performance Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence. Scientists from Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Chicago, NCSA and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) introduced a novel set of practical, concise and measurable FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles for AI models. The project leveraged Nvidia A100 GPUs, Nvidia TensorRT, Docker, Apptainer (formerly Singularity) and the SambaNova DataScale system.
  • Readers’ Choice: Outstanding Leadership in HPC. John Towns (UIUC/NCSA) was the principal investigator of the National Science Foundation’s XSEDE program, which just concluded its successful 11-year operation. Towns oversaw a successful enterprise that not only enabled countless scientific discoveries across an array of domains, but also developed workforces and created inclusive communities, including those that have been historically underserved.
  • Editors’ Choice: Workforce Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Award. The Center for Artificial Intelligence Innovation at NCSA’s “Future of Discovery: Training Students to Build and Apply Open Source Machine Learning Models and Tools” is an NSF-funded summer program that provides a 10-week training experience. The REU-FoDOMMat program works with minority-serving institutions to provide research opportunities and hands-on experience to undergrads.

The coveted HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are determined through a nomination and voting process with the global HPCwire community as well as selections from the HPCwire editors. The awards are an annual feature of the publication and constitute prestigious recognition from the HPC community. They’re announced at the start of the annual Supercomputing Conference which showcases high-performance computing, networking, storage and data analysis.
