Palo Alto, CA — Hewlett-Packard Company announced that Family Dollar, Inc., one of the fastest-growing discount-store chains in the United States, will move its enterprise from its current mainframe environment to an HP 9000 Enterprise Server platform running integrated, packaged retail applications from Oracle and Retek Information Systems.
The new enterprise solution will allow Family Dollar to use advanced technology to understand its customers’ merchandising needs and to predict customer demand better. This business-critical decision data then can be rolled back easily into Family Dollar’s business operations so the company can distribute merchandise more efficiently to its more than 3,000 stores in 38 states.
In addition, the solution, designed to support Family Dollar’s mission-critical computing solutions as it moves toward the Year 2000, helps ensure that current and historical operations data will not be lost in the transition.
“HP’s products and strong relationships with other industry leaders, such as Oracle and Retek, played a big role in Family Dollar’s ultimate decision,” said Wayne Usie, divisional vice president of I.T. “HP has demonstrated its ability to provide the level of performance and scalability needed within one box to serve our enterprise.
“HP’s Extended Enterprise strategy for retail provides Family Dollar with an open, flexible IT environment,” said Cassandra Moren, HP retail marketing manager. “This includes best-in-class solutions partners that will accommodate Family Dollar’s rapid growth and support its evolving business strategies for the future.”
