NEWS BRIEFS
St. Louis, MO — Unigraphics Solutions Inc. announces that the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri has selected additional packages of UGS’ Unigraphics and Solid Edge CAD/CAM/CAE software to further enhance its undergraduate engineering courses. A $4.5 million partnership between Unigraphics Solutions and Washington University, which was initiated in 1998, will continue to provide an experiential learning environment where Washington University students benefit from hands-on exposure to the same software used by some of the world’s top manufacturing companies.
The partnership enables students enrolled in introductory mechanical design courses to use Solid Edge, while upperclassmen in advanced courses have the opportunity to use both Solid Edge and Unigraphics software.
“Solid Edge immediately places the students in a 3-D design environment,” says Jerry Craig, professor of mechanical engineering at Washington University. “The ability to model complex shapes and view the results in solid-shaded form greatly increases visualization. Design changes are quickly implemented and design intent can be monitored through the use of constraints. Our students are using the finest tools available.”
“Just three years ago, our advanced undergraduates were not exposed to this kind of CAD experience,” says Mark J. Jakiela, Ph.D., Lee Hunter professor of mechanical design at Washington University. “We’ve found that this exposure to real-world materials makes teaching design concepts much less abstract and more descriptive. The UGS software prepares students for the world after college. We’re grateful for Unigraphics Solutions’ support, which we believe has greatly improved the educational experience here at Washington University.”
“Unigraphics Solutions is proud to partner with Washington University, one of the nation’s premier education and research institutions, in empowering knowledge for 21st century engineers,” says J. Randall Walti, UGS Vice President & General Counsel. “We are committed to helping academic institutions develop engineers and technologists of the highest caliber for our communities, customers and business partners.”
Washington University, a medium-sized, independent university, is dedicated to challenging its faculty and students alike to seek new knowledge and greater understanding of an ever-changing, multi-cultural world. The university is counted among the world’s leaders in teaching and research and draws students and faculty to St. Louis from all 50 states and more than 90 nations. The university is highly regarded for its commitment to excellence in learning. Its programs, administration, facilities, resources and activities combine to further its mission of teaching, research and service to society. The university offers more than 80 programs and almost 1,600 courses leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in a broad spectrum of traditional and interdisciplinary fields, with additional opportunities for minor concentrations and individualized programs.
