Albuquerque, NM -- MUSE Technologies, Inc. announced that it has been awarded a major contract by the U.S. Navy to adapt the company's MuSE software system to address problems of "information overload" that occur in shipboard environments. The objective of the project is to permit the fusion of various types of complex information into an easily understandable environment which enhances the speed of understanding and decision making and reduces training time. Results of the project are expected to influence future surface ship and submarine systems. Examples of types of information which might be handled by the Navy using MuSE system could include sonar data, undersea maps, the location of wrecks, water conditions and other sensor and imagery data. Typically, these diverse types of data are analyzed separately and independently by multiple systems and users. MuSE enables different types of information to be fused in a single, highly interactive environment, thus permitting faster and more effective interpretation. Under the terms of the contract, the Navy will become one of the first users to deploy MuSE (short for Multidimensional User-oriented Synthetic Environment) on personal desktop computers instead of high performance workstations. In addition, the contract calls for Continuum(TM), MUSE Technologies' network-based software product to enable Navy personnel in remote locations to share information environments. "The Navy's use of MuSE on the PC platform will create a breakthrough in highly interactive, real-time desktop computing", said Creve Maples, president and chief technical officer of MUSE Technologies, Inc. Maples added, "This technology has the potential of radically decreasing training times, significantly increasing comprehension and permitting users to discover correlations that have previously been impossible." The MuSE system is a powerful user interface that will enable each PC user to select customized environments which include, for example, speech recognition, sound, voice synthesis, stereo vision, head tracking and even virtual reality. Numerous governmental agencies, leading research and educational institutions and Fortune 500 companies are also using the patented MuSE system to interact with complex and diverse information. The Navy awarded the multi-year and multi-phase contract to MUSE Technologies, Inc. based on successful prior work in which the MuSE system was applied to advanced problem solving situations. The current project is being sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and is being directed by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.
