May 15, 2024 — The HPCQS consortium is making waves at ISC 2024, which began on May 13 in Hamburg, by unveiling the imminent installation of Pasqal’s first 100-qubit analog quantum computer at CEA’s TGCC in France, slated to be operational by September 2024.

This quantum computer was acquired by GENCI in the context of the HPCQS European project, and it will be coupled with the Joliot-Curie supercomputer, located in the same center. A twin system will be installed at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre later this year, marking a significant milestone in Europe’s quantum computing landscape.

Currently, Pasqal is demonstrating this groundbreaking technology live at ISC, offering attendees a glimpse of its integration with the Joliot-Curie supercomputer. The event also highlights substantial expansions to the HPC-QC software environment, introducing new tools like Callisto, Felis, MIMIQ, and Qrisp, which complement the existing suite of emulators and programming frameworks.

The use of such emulation services will allow users to be trained and then develop and prepare hybrid HPC/quantum computing applications before being deployed on real physical systems soon available across Europe through HPCQS and EuroHPC. To some extent such emulators will also serve to validate results performed on physical systems in the future.

At the ISC, visitors currently have several opportunities to take a closer look at the Pasqal analogue quantum computer purchased by HPCQS and the Pulser software running on it during demonstrations. Pasqual demonstrations are taking place today and tomorrow both at the GENCI-booth and the Gaus Centre for Supercomputing (GSC) / JSC booth. The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing/JSC and GENCI exhibition stands are also ideal places to find out more about the role of HPCQS in the overall European HPC strategy and the current status of our project work.

On May 16, the event will host several workshops aimed at offering attendees a concentrated and comprehensive forum for presentations, discussions, and engagement on specific topics. Key among these is the HPCQS consortium workshop, specifically organized for ISC 2024, to present the first project results to researchers and companies. This event, a product of close cooperation between ICHEC, Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), and Pasqal, seeks to integrate potential end users into the HPCQS community, highlighting the hybrid system’s capabilities and user engagement facilitated through JUNIQ.

In addition to these project-specific happenings at ISC 2024, the HPCQS partners are involved in other presentations and discussion panels on the topics of supercomputing, pre- and post-exascale computing and hybrid HPC/QC.
