Pittsburgh, PA -- FORE Systems, Inc., a global supplier of networking solutions based on an Intelligent Infrastructure, announced that, according to a recent study issued by In-Stat, a Scottsdale, Arizona-based networking market research firm, FORE was the worldwide leader in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) local area network (LAN) switch revenues and port shipments and also ATM adapter unit revenues and shipments for the fourth quarter (Q4) 1997. This data closely tracks with the information released in recent reports issued by the Dell'Oro Group of Portola Valley, California, and International Data Corp. (IDC) of Framingham, Massachusetts. Those independent research firms declared FORE as the market leader for the fourth quarter of 1997 for both ATM enterprise backbone switches (Dell'Oro Group) and ATM campus LAN switches (IDC). Results of the In-Stat study show FORE Systems ahead of Cisco Systems, Bay Networks and 3Com with 26 percent of the $583 million worldwide ATM LAN switch revenues for calendar year 1997. FORE is also reported as the leader in worldwide sales of ATM adapters with 45 percent of all ATM adapters shipped last calendar year. Additionally, for the most recent calendar quarter ending in December, FORE was the leader in both categories with market shares of 30 percent for worldwide ATM LAN switch revenues and 40 percent for worldwide ATM adapter revenues. "Even in the face of increased competitive pressure, FORE Systems maintains their leadership position in the enterprise ATM market," says Jeremy Duke, senior director of networking at In-Stat, a Cahners Business Information Company. "FORE's aggressive push with the ForeRunnerLE ATM switch family paid off handsomely in Q4. FORE's ATM LAN switch sales grew 64 percent over the prior quarter. This is significant given that FORE's nearest competitor grew under 10 percent for the same period."
